Mexico’s history is usually told through two roots, Indigenous and Spanish. But Mexico also has a third root, African. During the colonial period, hundreds of thousands of African people were brought into what is now Mexico, and their descendants became part of the population, the culture, the labor, the music, the food, and the families that built modern Mexico. When Mexicans talk about ancestry, the African root deserves to be remembered with the same seriousness as the Indigenous and Spanish
