Qwaqwa was a homeland in South Africa for the Basotho people. It was located in the northeastern part of the Free State province and had an area of 5,200 square kilometers (2,000 sq mi). The capital was Phuthaditjhaba. Qwaqwa was established in 1974 as a homeland for the Basotho people who were not living in Lesotho. It was granted self-governing status in 1981.
